Art Borneo Connection

A platform for the encounter of artistic works between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam.

The Art Borneo visual art exhibition serves as a meeting point for cross-national artistic collaboration among countries that share the island of Borneo: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Borneo possesses a distinctive geographical potential, as it is intrinsically connected by these three nations. This potential enables the formation of networks among art practitioners through an exhibition initiated by cultural actors in Kalimantan, aimed at fostering collaboration with artists from Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam within a major exhibition held in Kalimantan specifically in West Kalimantan, Pontianak City.

“Bala Dingan” is presented as a representation of the idea of weaving networks and building artistic connectivity across Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke as well as Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. The term “Bala Dingan” is derived from the Dayak Bidayuh language of Entikong, Sanggau, West Kalimantan. “Bala” means a group or collective, while “Dingan” means friend or companion. Thus, “Bala Dingan” can be understood as “a gathering of friends,” referring to a collective of kin and art practitioners who are interconnected in weaving the Art Borneo exhibition together.
